Sibutramine (Reductil in Europe and other countries), usually as sibutramine hydrochloride monohydrate, is an orally administered agent for the treatment of obesity. The drug is a direct serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, structurally similar to amphetamine. It belongs to a group of drugs for the treatment of obesity and is used in a comprehensive maintenance treatment of patients with overweight. Sibutramine increases the risk of heart attack and stroke in patients with a history of heart disease.
